There was an interesting bit on cnn regarding the wikileaks debacle, which is related to this story. Its a good excercise for the moralists. They brought in 2 guests that had polar viewpoints to the issue and manged to discuss the issue without it becomong a shouting match.
On the photo itself I would have to say "well done time magasine". Its shocking visceral stuff.

Aside from telling a thousand words, a picture also allows for myriad of personal responses to the image (critical literacy).
